THE DANCING PROCESSION, St WILLIBRORD FESTIVAL

Country: Echternach
Description:In a custom dating at least as far back as far as the death of St Willibrord (AD739), pilgrims in Echternach dance for the purging of their sins. Participants congregate in the square in front of the town's abbey and dance to the sound of a huge 16th-century bell, parading through the streets of the town and up a staircase to visit the remains of the saint, preserved in the Basilica.

Description: Towards the end of June the Grand Duchy celebrates its National Day. Rather like New Year's Eve, the National Day party is held the night before (22 June). The capital is hopping and a traditional torchlight parade takes place after sundown in the city centre, while spectacular fireworks are set off from the bridge over the Petrusse Valley.
